SIX extra beds have been made available at Honiton Community Hospital - to help the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital cope with an outbreak of the Norovirus.Extra nurses have been drafted in, along with social care staff, to work at weekends.Devon Primary Care Trust says additional staffing is needed, to cope with the transfer of patients from Exeter to Honiton and other hospitals throughout East Devon. In total, 22 extra beds have been found at smaller hospitals - to help the Exeter hospital cope with admissions.Sally Slade, director of health and social care, said: "Devon PCT has got extra nurses working at its hospitals, and staff are working really hard to prepare plans for patients in the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital so that they can be transferred home with extra care, to a residential nursing home, one of our community hospitals or a rehabilitation unit."Our health and social care teams have been working very closely with the Exeter teams and, together, we are reviewing the situation at least twice a day."Honiton Tourist Information Centre was closed for one day recently when a member of staff contracted the virus.Meanwhile, the PCT is advising people suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting to stay at home. Victims of Norovirus are urged to keep warm, drink plenty of fluids and to let the illness run its course. Older people, who are already in hospital, are most at risk.
