Officials are keen to discover more about a bag of Axminster artefacts left outside the front door

Officials at Axminster Museum are keen to track down a mystery donor.

Stewards recently arrived at the Church Street centre to find a bag outside the door containing a host of interesting items from a bygone era.

Amongst the artefacts is a pair of gold-framed glasses made by Philips opticians who operated in Axminster in the 1900s

There are also medals, photo frames, a “Poirot-type” portable ashtray, a travelling knife, fork and spoon set, wooden backed hairbrushes, a sewing kit and a paperback novel – While Still we Live – by Helen MacInnes.

Douglas Hull, who organises the displays at the museum, said they were delighted to receive the items but were keen to know where they came from.

“There are lots of interesting bits and pieces but we really would like the donor to get in touch,” he said. “If we know where they came from we can write it up on our computer so we have the history to go alongside the artefacts.

“They are obviously from Axminster, probably a house clearance. We are really pleased to have them – it’s what museums are made for.”

Anyone who knows where the items came from is asked to contact Mr Hull on 01297 33522.
