Cuppas and cake will be served to local people at The Pippins Centre on the first Wednesday of the month

A new community café has been launched in Axminster.

It will be open for business at The Pippins Centre, in Lyme Road, on the first Wednesday of every month from 10am to 12noon.

For the first year the rent on the room is being paid by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

PCSO Hayley Widger explained that the idea for the café came from the Axminster neighbourhood police team. After speaking with local vulnerable or isolated members of the community, officers felt they needed something they could offer to these people.

“We spoke with Churches Together and other partner agencies to see if we could all come together, to create a safe place for people to meet and enjoy tea, coffee and home baking at a reasonable price,” said PCSO Widger.

“We also thought it was a chance to offer volunteer work to members of the community that want to build confidence and give something back to the community.”
