Councillor Henry Brown narrowly edged out existing town mayor Cllr John Zarczynksi at last night’s town council meeting to take the seat with one vote in it.

Cllr Brown is also chair of Honiton Town Council’s finance committee.

Councillors had discussed the option to conduct their votes publicly, but the majority voted to keep their decision secret.

Cllr Duncan Sheridan-Shaw was elected as deputy mayor unopposed.

In Axminster, Cllr Jeremy Walden was given the customary second time to continue as mayor for another year.

Cllr Peter Burrows was elected mayor at Seaton Town Council.
