New plans to tackle dog fouling in Honiton

PUBLISHED: 14:10 24 January 2014 | UPDATED: 14:10 24 January 2014

Dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets in Honiton will be the focus of a new initiative being rolled out to tackle fouling problems.

East Devon district councillor Phil Twiss told Honiton Town Council that discussions had been taking place with EDDC’s environment health officers on the best ways to address the issue.

He said: “As long as I have lived and worked in Honiton there has been an ongoing issue and debate about dog owners who fail to clear up after their dogs in Allhallows playing field. At the same time responsible dog owners are given a bad name and it is about time this is dealt with once and for all.”

As part of the measures, letters will be sent out to residents in the Allhallows area and enforcement officers will be carrying out regular patrols at different times of the day.

Members of the public are also being asked to report anyone who fails to pick up after their dog, especially if this is on a regular basis, to the district council.

Dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets could face enforcement action by way of a fixed penalty notice. A fine of £80 can be issued for a first offence.

If the situation persists more restrictions on dog activity could be applied to Allhallows playing field.

Cllr Twiss added: “I urge all dog owners to be responsible or risk more draconian measures.”
