New Christmas lights committee formed to look at the provision of Christmas lights in Honiton.

Thoughts are already turning to this year’s Christmas festivities – with a new committee having been set up to look at the provision of festive lights in Honiton.

David Foster, Mark Rich and Dan Lavery have come together to form the Honiton Christmas Lights Committee.

They are appealing to the local community to get involved and help with fundraising efforts, writes Katy Griffin.

Last year’s lack of Christmas lights caused an uproar amongst residents in the town.

“We want to get started and we want the town to get behind us. We want people to know we are being proactive and that something is being done,” said Mark.

The committee has already got £2,000 in place to fund the lights – £1,000 was donated by Lidl for lights last year, which the supermarket has allowed to be carried over to pay for lights this year. The other £1,000 is from the town council.

Christmas lights can cost up to £10,000. The committee is hoping to get lights covering lampposts to decorate High Street and New Street.

David, who is the chairman of the committee, added: “It is a collective effort. The community has got to come together. Please support us, join us and get involved.”

The funding for Christmas lights has previously come from the profits of the street market. However, last year the market was not in a position to fund the lights.

There are already plans in the pipeline to bring Christmas to Honiton early. The committee is planning to hold Christmas in July to boost funds for the lights.
