Hen says ‘yes’ to Owen’s marriage plea written in stones on the seafront at Seaton

The mystery couple behind the seafront pebble proposal at Seaton have stepped forward and declared: “We’re getting married!”

Carpenter Owen Clarke, 29, left the message ‘Hen will u marry me’ written in stones along the promenade for his partner to spot when they walked along the beach on Christmas Day.

“The pebble proposal was something I had thought of, but I did have some other ideas of how I would ask on the beach,” he said. “However, they wouldn’t have been feasible because the weather was horrendous.”

For sales executive Henrietta ‘Henny’ Graves-Morris, 24, the romantic shingle message was the dream proposal – once she spotted it.

“I actually missed it first time,” she said. “We were walking our puppy and suddenly Owen stopped by the message but I kept walking.”

It was only when Henny turned around to see Owen on one knee holding up a sparkling engagement ring that she realised what was happening.

“He looked at the message and asked me to read it out,” she said. “It was very romantic. We are hoping to tie the knot next year but we haven’t got a set date yet.”

Owen added: “I was a little nervous at the time, but I was also excited because it was a big moment. It capped off the perfect Christmas.”

* The couple, who live in Seaton, were identified following an appeal in last week’s Midweek Herald asking “Who was the Christmas shingle belle”.
