Weekly ‘drop-in’ centre is designed to help people aged 16 to 24 find work

A pioneering scheme to help younger people find work has been launched at Axminster.

Independent Futures, part of Devon and Cornwall Housing, has set up the first of what it hopes will be a series of job clubs across the region at Long Ragg Court, in Lyme Close.

Designed for people aged 16 to 24, the club runs on a ‘drop-in’ basis every Wednesday from 12.30pm to 3pm in the recently refurbished communal room at the Lyme Close centre and offers free internet access and friendly careers advice to young people.

There is a range of support on offer from trained volunteers, including those from Axminster Job Club who are on hand to help with CVs, covering letters and interview techniques. ‘Next Step’ advisors can cover sessions looking at an individual’s qualifications and what careers options are available.

Chris O’Neill, support worker for Independent Futures, said: “Our vision is to create a warm and welcoming environment that encourages positive interaction for young people who want to improve their job prospects.

“Young people can actively engage with and share the job club facility whilst integrating with the wider local community.”

Long Ragg Court provides young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness with temporary accommodation and support to get their lives back on track and skills to help them live independently.
