Officers warn people to guard their PIN numbers after two accounts were raided at Seaton

Police are warning residents to protect their bank card details after thieves raided two people’s accounts at Seaton.

Officers say that in both incidents money was taken from cash points using stolen credit cards, after the offenders had obtained the owners’ PIN numbers.

PC Steve Speariett said that people should guard their details with great care.

He said: “You must never disclose your PIN number to anyone. If you do write it down never keep it with the cards or where it can be easily accessible. Ideally you should not have any copies of the PIN number written down.”

Meanwhile police say they have made a number of arrests following a burglary at the tackle shop in Axmouth, reported in last week’s edition of The Herald.

Inquiries into this offence were still on going at the weekend as were investigations in relation to the theft of a large quantity of lead flashing from the roof of Colyton Grammar School.

PC Speariett said these were two unusual offences and he urged people who saw any suspicious vehicles, especially larger ones, in areas where they would not normally expect to see them, to report it straight away, using 999 when appropriate.

Overall six crimes were recorded in February in the Seaton rural policing division as opposed to eight in the same month the previous year – a decrease of 25 per cent.

Since 2004 the monthly average crimes for February has been 11.
