Police in Honiton have been clamping down on unsafe and dangerous vehicles, illegal fuel and travelling criminals.

Honiton’s neighbourhood policing team ran an operation last Sunday at Smeatharpe Airfield and carried out stop checks on vehicles for roadworthiness and driving-related offences.

Officers from the road crime unit and representatives from the Environment Agency, HM Customs and Excise and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) assisted the team as part of Operation Mascot.

PC Clive Vickery, of Honiton’s neighbourhood policing team, who organised the operation, said: “The aim of these multi-agency operations is to clamp down on unsafe and dangerous vehicles, illegal fuel and travelling criminals.”

Three motorists were reported for having ‘red diesel’ and one motorist was found with no MOT. Police issued a penalty notice for possession of cannabis to one driver. Eight motorists were reported for construction and use offences relating to their vehicles.

14 motorists had ‘prohibited’ notices issued on their vehicles due to mechanical faults.

Police will be continuing these operations during the year due to their success.
