Police find £30,000 haul stolen from Exmouth

Equipment worth thousands of pounds stolen from a seafront trader has been found by police.

A police investigation has uncovered thousands of pounds worth of stolen goods belonging to an Exmouth trader.

Stephen Rollason’s Esplanade business, Liquid Motion Watersports, was burgled overnight in May – just two months after it opened – and equipment valued at around £30,000 was stolen.

So Mr Rollason was “chuffed” to receive a call from police in Plymouth who recently discovered his stolen goods in a lock-up in Cornwall while investigating a separate matter.

The seafront trader said: “I was completely shocked to see it. I really didn’t think I was going to be getting it back. I am really impressed with the police – they probably found about 70 per cent of what was stolen.”

Wetsuits, all the shop’s kite surf and windsurf equipment, kayaks, skate and long boards, plus a number of large Caprina and RRD kites were stolen in the overnight raid earlier this year.

Most of the items still had their the original labels, enabling officers to trace the rightful owner.

“When I got the call I thought I would see a few bits,” said Mr Rollason. “But there was a truckload of it.”

Three kayaks worth around £3,000 remain missing at the time of going to press.

Detective Sergeant Mark Newnham, based at Plymouth, said the find was “unexpected”.

He said the equipment was discovered while investigating officers were searching various lock-ups in the Plymouth and Cornwall area.

When a false name was thrown up as a part of the investigation, officers searched one of a pair of lock-ups in Cornwall, discovering the stolen goods.

Det Sgnt Newnham said: “It was a bit of luck. When we opened that lock up there was most of the stolen equipment and items from the break-in.”
