A public consultation is to be held to give members of the public the opportunity to view plans for the proposed Premier Inn and redevelopment of Honiton Garage.
It will be held on Thursday, October 3, from 11am until 9pm, at the Turk’s Head Lodge.
Andrew David, the director of Yelverton Properties, said: “We hope as many people can attend the consultation as possible and share their views on this new development.”
The Turk’s Head Lodge site in Honiton could undergo a major redevelopment if proposals are given the go-ahead.
Honiton Town Council’s planning committee was given a presentation of the plans for Honiton Garage and new Premier Inn hotel at a meeting last week.
Proposals for Honiton Garage, which is owned by Richard Harris, will see an overhaul of its current facilities and building.
The canopy will be extended inwards and the shop front will be moved back. A new building containing a shop, subway-style outlet and a paint and body shop will be built.
It will be taller to allow for larger vehicles to be serviced as well as MOT bays able to accept bigger vehicles and motorbikes. There will still be a car wash on site.
As part of the plans, the garage’s four existing fuel islands will be replaced and two more will be added.
The meeting heard that the redevelopment would see an increase in employment opportunities at Honiton Garage, which currently employs 18 people at the garage alone. This could increase to possibly 22 or 25.
Architect Crispin Denny said: “There will be no changes to the site’s access or uses on the site.”
A separate presentation was given regarding the Premier Inn hotel, which will replace the existing Turk’s Head Lodge and former motel site.
Premier Inn has completed a deal with Yelverton Properties to redevelop the site into the 66-bedroom hotel and restaurant. The hotel project is estimated at £4million and will create 25 new jobs.
James McMurdo, of Yelverton Properties, said: “Those that enter the town from the west or leave, heading west, pass this site, which is highly visible, and is quite important to Honiton and how the landscape treatment is dealt with.”
The design would use ‘light, soft landscaping’, and the building design would ‘mitigate’ any perceived overlooking.
Mr McMurdo told the meeting that Yelverton Properties wase aware of the existing traffic issues at the junction and that it would be willing to donate land for a roundabout scheme to be implemented by the highways authority.
A transport assessment will also be made as part of the planning application.
No formal planning applications have been submitted yet.
