Town council unanimously calls for Seaton Quay housing scheme to go ahead
Redeveloping the long-derelict Racal factory site at Seaton is a priority, the town council has insisted.
That was the verdict at an extraordinary meeting called to discuss East Devon District Council’s refusal to remove an affordable homes condition from plans to build 90 flats on the riverside land.
Owners, the Axe Riverside Company Ltd say the requirement to provide 36 low cost units within the development makes the £19million scheme unviable in today’s housing market.
And at the special town council meeting members unanimously agreed that it was essential for Seaton that the
Residents heard that the town council was “very disappointed” to learn that East Devon’s development management committee members had put their desire for affordable homes ahead of the specific needs of Seaton, as well as ahead of EDDC’s own stated policies to regenerate the town.
Many members of the public spoke up in support of the Seaton Quay proposal and were concerned that time was running out for the application, with the current planning permission due to expire next spring.
In a statement town clerk Tony Le Riche said: “The site, which is seen as vital for the economic input into the town, is a brownfield site that will bring in much needed public facilities for the town as well as providing homes for 90 families who will spend money with businesses.
“The developer was also due to provide a crucial flood defence scheme, without which no other development on the site can take place.”
Seaton Town Council agreed to ask the district council planners to reconsider their decision for the future of the town.
And it is urging residents to write to Cllr Mark Williamson, Chairman of the Development Management Committee, requesting him to allow this decision to be reviewed.
