SEATON Town Council s position over regeneration in the town has been questioned following the former mayor s comments in a national newspaper.

SEATON Town Council's position over regeneration in the town has been questioned following the former mayor's comments in a national newspaper.

Speaking in the Guardian, Sandra Semple criticised Tesco and blamed it for a loss of individuality and identity in the town.

She also hit out at a 'Tory-run district council' for claiming the giant superstore was the only company capable of regenerating the town.

John Seward highlighted the article at the annual council meeting and called for the council to explain its stance on the planned site.

Town clerk David Mears and deputy chairman Jim Knight said it was the council's priority to bring greater facilities to the area.

Town clerk David Mears told the Midweek Herald: "The town council is working with all partners in the regeneration of Seaton, to ensure the delivery of the visitor centre, town centre management and youth facilities, which Tesco are making a substantial contribution towards the delivery of these much-needed projects.
