Mystery young woman delivers food and gifts to their home

A Seaton couple say they have been left stunned by the generosity of a mystery woman who brought food and gifts to their home.

Stroke victim David McDonough and his wife Valerie, of St Gregory’s Court, say the random act of kindness has ‘blown their minds’ and they are desperate to thank her properly.

Mrs McDonough, 59, her husband’s full time carer, said the woman, aged around 20, knocked on their door at around 6pm on Tuesday, January 12.

She said: “There was a young girl standing there who I have never seen before. She simply said to me ‘This is a random act of kindness and I am not looking for anything back. I’m not asking for money or anything else’.

“She then handed me two bags of groceries and two bunches of flowers. I asked her what her name was and she said she was called Joey. I told her my name was Val and gave her a big hug and said thank you for your kindness.”

“I hope that she reads this and knows how much this random act of kindness has been appreciated. I have found this quite amazing and I’m completely stunned. It’s lovely to know that there are people in this world who care about other people in such a wonderful way.”

Mr McDonough, 56, said: “We are not rich people, so imagine this person turning up with around £25 worth of food as well as flowers and a card. It was very humbling. We just want this young girl to know what an impact it had – it’s not just the food it’s the kindness behind it.”

The couple moved into sheltered housing after Mr McDonough, a former milkman, suffered a stroke in 2010. In 2014 Mr McDonough, was awarded a Life After Stroke certificate from the Stroke Association in recognition of his bravery in coming to terms with the effects of the condition. His wife received a similar award in honour of the support she has given him throughout his recovery.
