Pupils in Broadhembury get behind Big Lottery bid.

Pupils at Broadhembury Church of England Primary School have been getting behind a funding bid for a new parish hall.

The children in the school’s art club were tasked with designing a new logo to be used in the bid to the Big Lottery Fund to replace the village’s current Broadhembury Memorial Hall, which is no longer fit for purpose.

They worked with local artist Helen Pullen, who helped them prepare their competition entries, which were judged by members of the village’s art club, Avril Williams and Gerald Radcliff.

The winning entry was by Josie Cathcart, Jasmine Bennellick and Skye Nicholls, who were presented with art prizes from John Russell, the vice-chairman of Broadhembury Memorial Hall Trustees.

Headteacher Katie Gray said: “The school has been delighted to support the Big Lottery bid for a new village hall. A new hall would be a real asset for the school - we would use it for PE lessons and after school clubs as well as drama productions and community events.”

Over the last 13 years the parish has raised £90,000 towards the project.

A spokesman for the trustees said: “The successful achievement of a £500,000 Big Lottery grant will enable the trustees of the Broadhembury Memorial Hall to replace the existing dilapidated building which is 90 years old and no longer fit for purpose.

“The plan is for a new multi-use building on the footprint of the current hall fit to meet the wide ranging needs of 21st century parish life, the aspirations of all inhabitants both young and old and to ensure they have, for the foreseeable future, better opportunities for social integration, recreation and improvements in health, welfare and quality of life.

“It will be a massive benefit and fillip for the whole parish.”

The bid for the Big Lottery funding is in the second stage of the application process.

Children at the primary school have also written letters in support of the funding bid.
