Lyme Lunge raises £2,800 for the children’s cancer charity Clic Sargent

Hardy swimmers have helped Lyme Regis Rotary Club splash out for Clic Sargent, the children’s cancer charity.

Despite appalling weather the Lyme Lunge, on New Year’s Day, attracted another big turnout and raised nearly £2,800.

The money came through collections on the day, sponsorship and donations of various sorts, including through the ‘Just Giving’ website.

Farah Batchelor, from Clic Sargent, said: “This was a wonderful achievement. The weather was dreadful on the day of The lunge and it was touch and go as to whether it would happen. But with the support of the RNLI volunteers and other organisations to provide safety in the water and on the beach around 180 swimmers took part. Thanks to them, to the huge crowds that gathered in support and to local businesses this tremendous sum of money was raised to help young people who are diagnosed with cancer, and their families.

“We supported over 80 Dorset children who were diagnosed with cancer last year, and their families, at an average cost of £4,000 per family. This impressive sum raised by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis will help so much, our heartfelt thanks to all who made it possible.”

In addition to the £2,800 raised for Clic Sargent, the Rotary Club is aware of a further £2,500 raised for other charities by Lungers through personal sponsorship.

Rotarian Jim Moseley, who organised the event, said: “A lot of people contributed to the success of The Lunge on January 1. It was a great team effort and a great result for Rotary, for Clic Sargent and for the Lyme Regis business community.

“A great number of people came to Lyme to watch and to participate in this event which is now established in the town’s calendar. We look forward to making it an even bigger success in 2015. Thanks to all who helped make it possible.”
