Team Mear triumphs in memory of Steve

Sponsored walk across Devon to remember a former Colyton Primary School headteacher.

The wife and daughter of a former Colyton Primary School headteacher have completed a sponsored walk across Devon in his memory.

Penny and Rebecca Mear completed the 117-mile walk on Sunday as a tribute to Steve, who died in April after losing his battle with stomach cancer.

It has taken the mother and daughter pair, Team Mear, five weekends to complete the Two Moors Way challenge, having walked from Wembury on the south coast to Lynmouth on the north.

Last Sunday they completed the final leg of the walking challenge in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care and FORCE, which has allowed them to take in the sights of Dartmoor and Exmoor along the way.

“As Steve loved Devon, we felt that walking across the county would be the best way to remember him,” said Penny and Rebecca.

Steve was the headteacher at Colyton Primary School from 1990 to 2006 and was a well-known figure in the area - he was often seen in Seaton bay on his wooden boat, Truant, or on his tractor at Colyton Tractor Run.

He moved to Buckerell in 1994 and developed a strong reputation for organising vibrant community events for the village.

During the challenge, Penny and Rebecca have been accompanied by friends and colleagues from Colyton and neighbours from Buckerell.

They are grateful for all the support they have received and have so far raised more than £2,000 for their chosen charities.
