A founding member of TRIP Community Transport Association in Honiton has been honoured for her years of dedicated service.

Val Royle, who is the chairman of the charity, was presented with the outstanding lifetime contribution award at Devon County Council’s 15th annual Community Transport Awards held at County Hall in Exeter.

“It is a great privilege,” says Val. “I was very pleasantly surprised.”

Val is described as the ‘backbone’ of community transport in Honiton and started as secretary of the Honiton Ring and Ride when it was first formed 25 years ago.

A nomination letter said: “Her continued support and guidance over 25 years has been vital and enabled TRIP to now serve over 25,000 people per year throughout the East Devon area, and become the forward thinking and pro-active group that it is today.”

Val was instrumental in establishing TRIP and has been chairman since it started in 1995.

The charity, which is based in New Street, is a vital lifeline in Honiton and the surrounding areas providing a ring and ride and voluntary car services as well as the Acorns befriending scheme. It has recently started selling a range of mobility aids.

Val has congratulated all the other winners who were chosen by a judging panel made up of Devon county councillor Stuart Hughes, chief executive of the Community Council of Devon Elaine Cook, and patient advice and service liaison (PALS) manager for N.E.W. Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Alison Holder.

TRIP will be holding its annual meeting on Tuesday, July 1, at Honiton Methodist Hall, from 7.30pm.
