Mike Allen, district councillor for Honiton St Michaels, said that group has been served with a 24-hour eviction notice.

This means if they do not leave the field today, they will be towed off the site.

Mr Allen, who lives close to Violet Hayman Playing Field - opposite Littletown Primary Academy - said people were concerned by the travellers’ presence.

He said: “Violet Hayman Playing Field is very widely used and it is summer time, so kids will be trying to use them

“The group was served with an eviction notice yesterday, so they have to be out some time today.

“If they do not move out, they will be towed off.

“We took action immediately - the travellers were first at Silver Street, then Old Elm Road - then came here.

“We were following them and tracking them all the time, ensuring that any anti-social behaviour was tackled immediately.

“They have to leave today and we are actively trying to find special places for travellers along the A303.

“We have a number of sites were are looking at so they have every amenity given to them instead of settling down on unsuitable sites.”

The Herald has approached East Devon District Council for comment.
