Axe Valley residents turn out in force to mark the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings

Communities across the Axe Valley turned out in force today (Friday, June 7) to pay tribute to the nation’s D-Day heroes.

Services were held in towns and villages across the region to mark the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

At Seaton a large crowds joined civic leaders and Royal British Legion officials for a ceremony in Windsor Gardens. Standards were carried by Jim Partridge Hogbin and Bruce Roberts.

RBL Branch chairman Lt Cmdr Derek Payne said they were there to “honour all the people who took part in that dramatic day”.

At Axminster there was a big turnout for a service of remembrance around the war memorial on the Minster Green, led by Rector Rev John Streeting assisted by the Rev Geoffrey Walsh. The piper was Charlie Nicholls, from Axmouth, a retired major from the RAMC and the standard bearers were Valerie Clarke and Stan Fifer.
