Axminster’s historic twinning oath was virtually destroyed in the Minster Church fire, it has been revealed.

The unique hand-written document, marking the link between the town and Douvres la Delivrande, in Normandy, was badly burned in the recent arson attack.

‘The ‘Oath’, written in French and English, set out the aspirations of the two communities in pursuing their friendship.

It was originally signed in the Minster Church on the April 24, 1999, by the mayors’ of Douvres and Axminster – Cllr Don Self.

For many years, the framed Oath has hung in the church and was unfortunately displayed near to where the fire was started.

A spokesman for the twinners said: “It is hoped that a replacement can be obtained but the Oath is hand written and this might prove difficult.

“However, Axminster and District Twinning Association Chairman Caroline Hillyard is currently in Douvres and will discuss its replacement with the Mayor.”
