Police vehicle attacked and windscreen smashed. Armed response officers and dog handler called in. Incident in Stockland now over.

Police have said they were called to Stockland early this morning after reports that a man threatened two males with a large axe.

The alleged victims were walking along a road near the Old Telephone Exchange when they were threatened, but were able to get into their car and drive away from the scene.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary said a police dog handler located the suspect between Stockland and Horns Hayes Farm. However, police vehicle was attacked by the man with the axe - causing substantial damage to the windscreen.

Police say armed response officers attended the scene and negotiated with the suspect.

The spokesman said: “Shortly afterwards, the man surrendered himself to the police and he was arrested at around 7.30am.

“No-one was injured during the incident.

“The suspect, a 49-year-old local man, is in custody at Heavitree Road Police Station.”
