Police confirm that microlight pilot who died and his badly injured son came from Wiltshire

Police have revealed that the man who died in a microlight crash near Colyton on Good Friday was in his fifties and came from Wiltshire.

But they still have not named him nor his nine year old son who suffered serious injuries when the aircraft came down in fields off Seaton Road, near Wiscombe Grange, at around 9.30am.

The crash is being investigated by the Air Accident Investigation Branch, and the Coroner has been informed.

Meanwhile Jim Greenshields the boss of Somerset Microlights – a training school based at Dunkeswell airfield, near Honiton - said the victim was not known to them.

He said it was unlikely that engine failure would have led to such a tragic outcome and as far as he knew weather conditions were not bad at the time.

“Flex wing microlights glide extremely well and can land in such a small area it is unusual for engine failure to be an issue,” he told The Herald.

“Beyond that I have absolutely no idea what could have happened.”
