The Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton has teamed up with Magic Carpet to bring to life the story of Nkosi the lion.

Visitors to the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton will be transported to the wilds of Africa as part of a new exhibition.

The gallery has teamed up with Magic Carpet, a local arts for health charity, to bring to life the story of a young male lion.

Impisi, which was written by Honiton-born author Clive Essame, is the story of Nkosi the lion, who is about to take over the pride when he is caught in a wire snare. He escapes, but his leg is badly damaged.

The book follows his journey to fulfil his true potential.

Impisi is about how society sees people with disabilities and how people with disabilities see themselves,” says Clive.

Magic Carpet at THG features work produced by a local group of adults with learning disabilities who worked with Clive and sculptor James Lake to create an exhibition of collage and sculpture inspired by the characters of Impisi.

The artwork is accompanied by a series of five extracts from the book.

The exhibition will be on display on the landing and learning room at the gallery and runs until Saturday, February 15.
