What’s the future for Honiton’s tollgates?

The town council is to look into potential funding sources.

Potential funding sources could be sought for the reinstallation of Honiton’s historic tollgates.

The tollgates, two of which are situated at the top of King’s Road, were discussed by Honiton Town Council during a meeting of its policy committee last week.

Councillor Roy Coombs advised that various sources of funding would be available for such a project.

In 2006 the town council applied for planning permission to install a gate on the eastern side of the A35. However, the application was later withdrawn after a number of issues were raised. A briefing paper stated that a third gate had been delivered to the district council’s depot in Sidmouth in 2008 and was in a poor condition.

The outline cost quoted to the town council in 2009 by the district council, to repair and reinstall the gate, was £4,000. At that, time the town council thought it was inappropriate to add the cost to the precept.

Councillor Coombs stated the tollgate was a “very valuable asset”. “We have to show we are still interested. It was given to the people of Honiton,” he said.

The town council agreed to endorse the briefing paper and asked that a working be set up to look into funding and monitor the condition of the tollgate.

The matter will be revisited by the policy committee over the next 12 months.
