Widespread flooding reported

11:05 21 November 2012

Archant

The public are urged to take extra care.

There has been reports of widespread flooding across East Devon following heavy rainfall.

There was disruption on the B3177, heading towards the A30, this morning, as flood water at Butts Hill in Ottery St Mary forced many drivers to turn back.

There has also been reports of flooding in Honiton, Exmouth and Sidmouth.

The road at Langford Bridge in Honiton has been deemed impassible by Devon County Council.

Seaton Primary School, Membury Community School and Broadhembury Church of England Primary School have been closed.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has reported attending 51 incidents throughout the two regions as a result of flooding.

It has issued the following safety tips to the public:

•Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or fords. The water is often deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast. Your vehicle may be swept away or become stranded. Vehicles can float away in just two feet of water

•If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately if safe to do so and seek higher ground.

•Do not attempt to walk through flooded areas. Even shallow water moving fast can sweep you off your feet and there may be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris or deep channels; these can cause serious injuries or even death.
