Colyton Grammar School design and technology students take a tour at Pecorama

Design and technology students from Colyton Grammar School learned how components for model railways are made when they visited the Peco factory, in Beer.

The company, which was founded 68 years ago, is renowned for the very high quality of its products. Its model railways and electric trains are sold to enthusiasts around the world.

The A-level students were able to follow the entire design process, from the generation of computer concept models and engineers’ drawings, through production and packaging to the final display in a retail setting.

An in-depth tour of the factory, with expert commentary, was given by Paul Hitchcock, the New Products Development Manager and Tim Vincent, the shop floor manager.

A highlight of the trip was seeing Peco’s ultra-high precision machines in action, along with injection moulding, printing and semi-automatic hand assembly, coupled with the many quality control checks employed throughout manufacture.

Lyndsey Hunter, the school’s head of design and technology said: “We were incredibly lucky to be given such a thorough tour, the students gained valuable insight into how high tech manufacturing methods can be used to assure quality.”
