Devon and Somerset Gliding Club - the June course

The weather was fairly mixed this week, but the course instructors John Sillett and Guy Adams squeezed all the flyable time available for the five course members, writes Jill Harmer.

Mike King and Paul Dorey both from South Devon made significant progress training towards solo. Terry Green, Steve Joint and Geoff Adams were all new members to the club (although all had flown in a glider previously) and they all enjoyed learning new skills at North Hill airfield.

On Sunday, the conditions were forecast to be good for flying along the cliffs on the South coast above Sidmouth.

Two gliders set off for the cliffs towed by our Pawnee tow plane. James Hood and Mike Sloggett from Plymouth flew the DSGC Club DG505 advanced trainer and Mark Courtney also from Plymouth flying his ASW20 could all be seen flying above the cliffs between Sidmouth and Beer.

Unfortunately some showers developed and the flights had to be cut short with outlandings at Farway Common followed by road retrieves.

This weekend was the first leg of the south-west region Inter Club League, a national competition set up to encourage training in cross-country flying.

The DSGC team trailed their gliders to Keevil Airfield in Wiltshire. The weather on Saturday was disappointing in the morning, but a late afternoon task was set. On Sunday the forecast was much better but although the sky looked good, the soaring conditions proved to be quite tricky.

The best effort was by Pete Startup from Ottery St Mary who was flying in the Pundit class, flying a total of 230kms across Berkshire, Wiltshire and Somerset.
