The weather was almost perfect for the Axe Cliff Golf Club’s arrival of their new captains, writes Robert Grove.

The previous Drive-in had been postponed because of inclement conditions, but last Saturday saw a large number of members take part in a Texas Scramble event to mark the start of the captains’ duties.

As the teams had been drawn with each player required to take at least four of their drives each and with the team receiving 10 per cent of their combined handicaps it was always going to a closely contested competition.

It was the team of Alan Cooper (16), Andy Gabb (14) and last-minute replacement Matt Donnan (16) who prevailed with a final score of 63.4. In second place with 64.1 were Alex Palmer (12), Caroline Bond (33) and Chris Walker (14).

Third place had to decided on countback with Douggie Board (12), Simon Sweetland (18) and Mike Jamieson (25) beating Geoff Wake (14), Barbara Cummings (27) and Rob Heard (14) with a score of 65.5. The winners who had placed their markers on the first fairway to choose where the captains’ drives would finish were Steve Bond (captain’s drive), Edith Greenslade (lady captain’s drive) and Jack Bannister who predicted where the senior captain would finish. In their speeches to the packed clubhouse after the game the captain’s Glenda Board, Alan Kenworthy and Rob Grove thanked everyone for attending and reminded them that several county events were to be staged at the club during the season. The course was in superb condition and thanks went go to Simon and his green staff for providing such a beautiful course for such an occasion. We weren’t quite sure who to thank for the weather but we were all very grateful that the rain held off until the end. As an added bonus the collection for the various captain’s charities amounted to £400. The chatter in the clubhouse afterwards was all about if’s, buts and maybe’s, however, everyone agreed that they had enjoyed the day and if other functions during the year are equally as successful then Axe Cliff Golf Club captains will have a wonderful time in 2014.
