Archant

Last Monday a brave bunch of ladies and seniors went out to fight for the sought-after Tic Toc Trophy, writes Dave Bruce

The ladies lost last year so were given an extra eight shots as well as the usual difference in four-ball, better ball, matchplay.

Lady captain Caroline Bond, fresh back from her Ryder Cup marshalling duties in Paris, and her vice captain, Jill Wellington, were in sparkling form and quickly went five up on Dave Bruce and Geoff Hughes.

However, Dave and Geoff, after eating some soggy sandwiches, began a comeback that reduced the arrears to one of just two holes when Caroline decided the weather was getting worse and unbearable and decided to call the match off after 12 holes. Sacré bleu!

Mind you, there were no complaints from everyone else and the result was taken as read after the number of holes actually played.

It turned out to be an honourable draw at two-and-a-half to each team which means the men, as holders, retain the trophy.

This does mean that the ladies will still be only on an extra eight shots next year. ‘Quelle domage, Caroline!’

The other winning ladies’ pair was the one of Barbara Cummings and Pauline Willis.

The winning pairs for the men were the combinations of Tony Strong and Rob Grove and also Steve Gibson and Chris Walker.

Bob Cook and Leighton Morgan halved their match with Bob’s wife Alison and Sandra Walker.

Hot soup with roll helped everyone recover from the elements in the clubhouse.
