Axminster indoor bowlers start new season with mixed fortunes

Axminster bowlers have endured a mixed start to the new indoor season, writes David Harris.

A home meeting with Honiton ended in a 63-51 defeat with the only Axminster success coming via the rink of Malcolm Denslow, John Hill, Mavis Swallow, and Margaret Crompton, who won 26-15.

The other recent friendly saw visiting Chardstock beaten 77-30 with the wins coming from Mike Mellor, David Harris, Ann Dredge and Norman Denslow, 46-3, and Philippa White, Valerie Mellor, Brian Clark and Terry Dredge, 17-12.

A men’s friendly at Sidmouth ended in a thrilling four-shot Axminster success with one of the rinks winning by four shots and the other two ending in ties!

The winning rink was the one of Malcolm Denslow, David Harris, and Brian Clark, (20-16), while the rinks to finish all square were those of John Hill, George Mabon and Norman Denslow, (15-15), and also John Packham, Alfie Day and Ed Backhouse, (14-14).

There was also an Over-60s League match for the men at Mid Devon, one that the home side won 92-76.

The lone away success came from the rink of John Ellis, Alfie Day, David Harris and Norman Denslow, who win 21-15.
