Axminster bowlers enjoy success in friendly matches

19:28 19 March 2014

Axminster bowlers continued their fine recent run in friendlies last week, writes David Harris.

First up was a meeting with Chardstock that produced a 59-44 success with victory on all rinks; Pam Hunter, Brenda Raistrick, Alan Curtis, and Les Clark (23-16), Morrison Brown, Pam Clark. David Harris, and Margaret Crompton (19-14), and Francis Sell, Margaret Brown, Derek Pheby, and Brian Clark (17-14).

Next up was a visit from the South Dorset Bowls Association for the first time and this produced a 58-47 home triumph with the two Axminster winning rinks being those of Joan Quick, Lilian Lovatt, David Harris, and Bob Sherbornec (21-12) and Pam Clark, Ann Clayton, Ken Quick, and Norman Denslow (20-12).

The third match was a 77-42 victory over Feniton with wins for Brenda Raistrick, Barbara Mowatt, Derek Pheby, and Brian Clark (31-10) and John Hill, Lilian Lovatt, David Harris, and Ann Clayton (30-12).

Axminster ladies lost their last County Foxlands match against the very strong North Devon team (61-89). Three of the rinks suffered narrow defeats; the home rinks of Daphne Ryan, Brenda Raistrick, Sue Rowe, and Margaret Crompton (21-23) and Phillipa White, Margaret Stancliffe, Alison Glyde, and Judith Moffitt (16-18). The away rink to suffer a similar fate comprised of Pam Clark, Barbara Mowatt, Sheila Martin, and Chris Barber (15-18).

Axminster’s 15-year-old starlet Steven Apsey did well to finish in a commendable fifth position in the National Under-18 finals held in Bromsgrove last weekend and will still be eligible for the same competition for at least the next two years. Congratulations to Steven from all at the club.
