Axminster’s teenage bowling star Apsey into the last 16 of the national Under-16 competition

Our congratulations must again go to Stephen Apsey who travelled to Weymouth (Moonfleet) last Saturday to play another round in the National Under-18 Singles competition, writes David Harris.

Apsey triumphed 8-6, 8-6 reach the last 16 of the competition and this remarkable feat is made all the more noteworthy considering that Stephen is just 14 years of age.

It’s a magnificent achievement for both the youngsters and his proud family.

Meanwhile, Axminster continued their good form in the mixed friendlies with wins in three of the four matches played.

We started with an excellent win at home to Bridport (71-48) with wins on all rinks - Francis Sell, Pam Hunter, David Harris, and Brian Clark (30-16), Margaret Brown, John Hill, Tony Payne, and Neil Solomon (18-10), and Morrison Brown, Derrick Pheby, Pat Whitworth, and Margaret Crompton (23-22).

We then lost at home to Madeira (52-66) with only Alan Foster, Malcolm Denslow, Ann Clayton, and Stephen Apsey managing a win (23-14) before beating Ottery, again at home, by 68 to 56 shots with wins for Brenda Raistrick, Joan Quick, David Harris, and Neil Soloman (39-11) and Derrick Pheby, Margaret Brown, Ken Quick, and Brian Clark (15-12).

Finally we beat Dunkeswell at home (68-44) with wins for Phil White, Brenda Raistrick, David Harris, and Margaret Crompton (26-10) and John Hill, Margaret Brown, Ann Clayton, and Stephen Apsey (26-14).

Otherwise the Ladies lost their friendly at home to Sidmouth (40-65) whilst the men lost their County Over 60’s match against Torbay (61-101) – two bad results!
