Axminster Town were beaten 4-0 by title favourites Liverton, but there was much for boss Ray Self to enthuse about.
The Tigers chief said: “We contributed much to an excellent game against a very powerful team. They (Liverton) were able to afford the luxury of a seven player substitute’s bench and that just underlines the strength they have”
The Tigers battled well throughout the first half, restricting the hosts to just the one chance that they took in clinical fashion. Ben Vine spurned the best of the chances that Town fashioned before the break. Early in the second half Town were once again the victims of a penalty award against them when the ball appeared to hit the chest of Danny Beer. That led to a five minute spell when Town lost both shape and discipline and conceded two more. However, they rallied and finished the game strongly denying the hosts any further goals.
Self said: “We really are not getting any luck right now. We battle on and I am looking at the fixtures in March as hopefully our salvation in avoiding a last place finish.”
The Tigers, who have been told that even a bottom berth finish will not see them relegated host Crediton United (3pm) at Sector Lane on Saturday.
