Axminster’s batsmen delivered the goods on a sun-kissed Cloakham Lawns wicket that played its part in the team scoring the B Division’s highest total of the day, writes Stephen Birley.
It was a superb, chanceless century from Joel Seward that under pinned the Axminster total of 295-5.
Seward finished with an unbeaten 110 having come in at the fall of the first wicket.
Other contributions came from Jonny Hurford (55), Dave Field (47no) and skipper Tristan Wakeley who opened and scored 20.
Speaking of the Seward ton, Wakeley said: “It was the most mature knock I have seen fro him to date. It was certainly a very special innings and just what we have been looking for. Everyone chipped in and it turned out to be a good all-round effort with the bat.”
Visitors Gabriel made a good fist of the run chase and were finally all out for 234 with the prized wicket of star batsman Mike Gilmour falling to spinner Alex Wraight aided by a catch at deep mid-on by Wakeley. Wraight finished with two wickets for 41 and fellow spinner Gary Larcombe picked up three wickets for 34 whilst seamer Matt Pyle finished with figures of 3-37.
Speaking of his side’s 61-run win, Wakeley said: “It was a good day all round. I was keen for the batsmen to finally show, collectively, what they are capable of. I am very confident that in this Division we have probably one of the most all-round bowling attacks, but for me the key is batting well. We showed in this game that if the batsmen click into gear then we can be very competitive at this level and long may that continue.”
On Saturday, Axminster travel to Plymstock who were bowled out for 83 at Ivybridge at the weekend.
This coming weekend is the half-way mark of the Francis Clark Devon league season so has Wakeley’s pre-season view that consolidation after promotion from the C Division was the target? He said: “Nothing has changed. I want us to continue to show the batting quality we saw against Stoke Gabriel, but on a consistent basis. If we do that then I will be very satisfied and we will have no problem in achieving our pre-season aim. Anything more than that, would be a bonus!”
