The Seaton Carnival Open Shore Fishing competition was organised by Honiton Sea Angling Club and was held at Seaton last Friday and conditions could not have been much worse than they were on the night, writes Mike Spiller.

Twenty anglers braved the strong south easterly winds with rain and were allowed to fish between Seaton Hole in the west and Culverhole Point in the east for the best two fish of different species. At midnight the anglers met back up at the Spot On Café for the weigh-in.

John Turner returned to the scales with a nice bass of 7lb 10oz and a bull huss of 6lb 10oz which scored 163 per cent in total. This won the cash prize of £40 and a further £10 in the pool. In second was Colin Berry of the host club who recorded a dogfish and bull huss combination which scored 83 per cent, and won £20. Seaton angler Dave Bowyer was third with a single dogfish of 1lb 12oz, picking up £10 for his fish.

Most of the fish were returned alive after weighing but I think Turner was looking forward to having his bass for tea! Members checked for any litter on the beach and all reported that it was left clean and tidy by the anglers. £20 was raised by the competition towards the carnival and will be handed over shortly.
