Last weekend saw all Ottery’s internal competitions decided with two days of finals, writes Michael Smith.

In a keenly fought Men’s 4-Wood final Dave Brown overcame Mike Smith the narrowest of margins, winning 21-20 to become this years Ottery St Mary Men’s club champion.

The club champion lady for this year is Gail Hawke who proved too strong for opponent Margaret Bright in the final.

This year also saw Ottery’s first ever ‘amputee’ winner as Kevin Vernon, who has a prosthetic leg, was victorious in the Fred Burgess Cup, defeating Richard Chapple in the final.

Kevin, in his first season of bowling, also got through to the final of the triples competition where he ended up in the runners-up team that went down to Gaill Hawke, Molly Parker and skip Eric Saunders…

Well done, Kevin and all other winners and losers who took part to make it a very successful club championship.

The weekend finished up with a magnificent barbecue held on Sunday evening with food supplied and cooked by John and Terri Ward and their merry band of helpers.

A big thank you to all involved in the barbecue from all the club members.

In the men’s Over-60s Triples’ League the A team went down to St Thomas on both rinks and now have only a very slim chance of gaining promotion to Division Two.

There was however, more success for the B team as they first bagged an overall victory over Culm Vale B and then claimed a two-rink win over Honiton A which saw them bank 14 points in all to mean, hopefully, that they will stay in Division Six for next season.

The C team continue to struggle and they were beaten by North Tawton D in their latest outing.

We are nearing the end of the season now, but there is still the opportunity for new bowlers to try their hand on a Friday evening from 6pm, just wear flat shoes or trainers, everything else will be provided.
