Buckfastleigh to stage top point-to-point event on Sunday

PUBLISHED: 10:58 13 February 2014 | UPDATED: 10:58 13 February 2014

THE historical racecourse at Buckfastleigh is the location for this weekend’s Point-to-Point fixture, where the South Pool Harriers host their meeting on Sunday (February 16), writes Donna Harris.

This popular course offers a super day out for all the family, with two pony races heading up the action starting at 11am. The main six race card has attracted nearly 120 entries and starts at noon.

The prestigious Devon and Cornwall Area Classic Race, the £1000 Westcountry Champion Chase Mixed Open, sponsored by Totnes and Bridgetown Races Co is the feature of the day.

Entries include the Simon Partridge-trained Lucette Annie, she is unbeaten in her last three visits to Buckfastleigh, and won this race last year under jockey Darren Edwards, coming home twenty lengths ahead of Indiana Bay. Also in the line up could be the Sue Trump-owned Hunter Chase winner Kirkleigh from the bang in-form current leading trainer Robert Chanin. Minella Stars under Robbie Henderson cannot be left out of the equation if following up on his win at Larkhill in January.

Co-Op Funeral Care sponsor the opening confined race, in which the Ed Walker-trained Blazing Whale could improve on his second here last season and , having recently won at Chipley Park. Also entered is the Sue Popham trained Iron Chancellor, he has strong claims having romped home a thirty length winner at Wadebridge, and then an impressive ten length win at Black Forest Lodge two weeks ago.

The intermediate race is sponsored by Exeter Racecourse, in which the Kayley Woollacott-trained Ailanthus ran well under jockey Robbie Henderson at Little Windsor last year, but may have a stiffer task here stepping up into intermediate company. Babeny Bridge under jockey Lizzie Kelly recently clocked up a good second one and a half lengths behind Blazing Whale at Chipley Park. Romassor from the Chloe Roddick team won his restricted at Chipley Park by a short head and will be looking for his hat-trick of wins this season.

In the confined maiden race for horses and geldings, Diamond Eclipse trained by Emma Loosemore, ran well first time out this season when third at Black Forest Lodge, and Templeton had clocked up a third in a Chase in Ireland last September, now with the Kayley Woollacott team, looks a worthy each way bet.

The Jockey Club sponsor the open maiden race for mares and fillies, this could be a race for a newcomer like the Richard Barber-trained Dancing Solo, who looks an interesting entry being a half sister to winning hurdler Dancingtilmidnight.

Concluding the days events is the restricted race in which Zara Phillips holds two entries with Calusa Comet and more interestingly Devils Boys, who won a 17-runner Point to Point in Ireland. Ratline Rose having recently won at Wadebridge and the front running Lord Samson are two other suggestions.

The course offers great viewing, hot food, bar (real ale), bookies and numerous trade stands. Accessed from A38 at Lower Dean. Post Code TQ11 OLT

Entrance is £20 carload (up to five occupants) and £10 for a car and driver.
