Archant

For the Captains’ Drive-In day the course at Axe Cliff was, unusually, closed because of frost but this did not deter the intrepid captains from at least Driving-In to start their year in office, writes Rob Grove.

Members from all three sections gathered at the sides of the first fairway having put their respective markers in the ground where they anticipated their captains’ drives would finish.

Clad in as many layers of clothes as they could muster to keep out the chilly easterly breeze the lady captain, Sandra Walker, senior captain, John White and club captain, Basil Dean performed their task with alacrity and some degree of precision so that they could return to the warmth of the clubhouse and present their respective prizes.

The lucky winners who had judged where the drives would rest were Lesley Crawford (ladies’ prize), Gerry Seward (seniors’ prize) and Barbara Cummings (club captain’s prize). It was decided to arrange the Texas Scramble competition later on in the year when, hopefully, it will be a little warmer and golfers won’t have to wear so many layers of clothing.
