Three members of Chard and District Swimming Club competed in the South West Open Water Swimming Championships held at Preston beach, Weymouth, writes Hannah Pullinger.

Henry Taswell and Ben Greenslade, swimming in the 13/14 years category, took gold and silver respectively for Somerset in the 1500 metres whilst 16-year-old Lauren van den Barselaar finished a creditable fourth in the girls 15-18 years category, improving on her 2013 time by three minutes.

The Championships comprise of various race distances from 750 metres right up to the gruelling 10km all held under FINA (The International Swimming Federation) rules which does not permit the wearing of wetsuits.

Conditions were however, perfect for the Chard trio with light winds and a sea temperature of just over 17 degrees.
