Chard and District Swimming quartet excel at South West Regional Championships

Four young Chard and District Swimming Club swimmers qualified to compete at this years ASA South West Regional Junior Age Group Championships for 14 years and under swimmers, held over two weekends at Millfield School and Bristol Henleaze, writes Hannah Pullinger.

To compete at this level swimmers need to have previously achieved the necessary qualifying times for their age, allowing them to race against the best swimmers in the South West of England.

Three of the swimmers achieved qualifying times for the first time to swim at these Championships; Henry Taswell, 13, qualified for eight events, 100 and 200m butterfly, 100 and 200m freestyle, 100 and 200m backstroke and 200 and 400m Individual Medley.

Joss Copeman, 12, qualified in the 100m backstroke and Xanthe Dyer 12, in the 100m breaststroke.

Fourteen-year-old Lewis Pearson was competing in his second Regional Championships and swam in five events, 100, 200 and 400m freestyle and 100 and 200m backstroke.

All swam long course personal bests in their events.

Seven of the Club’s Regional qualifiers also travelled to Gloucester for the South West Regional Sprint competition last weekend.

Thirteen-year-old Henry Taswell achieved third place overall in his age group and was presented with a bronze award.

Jamie Pullinger came fourth in the 15 year boys and Lewis Pearson was sixth in the 14 year boys.

In the girls’ events Hannah Pullinger was sixth and Tessa Down seventh overall in the 17 and over girls.

Twelve-year-olds, Joss Copeman and Xanthe Dyer, also swam and achieved several personal best times.

Congratulations to all these swimmers for achieving the necessary standard to compete at this level.
