Clinton Vase success for East Devon club captain Clive Bennett

The Clinton Vase

Archant

The Centenary Vase, presented by Lord Clinton in 2002, is the prize which was played for on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Paul Willoughby.

That the club has survived for 112 years is quite an achievement; when it was founded in 1902, Queen Victoria had only been dead a year and King Edward VII was still the ‘new’ monarch on the throne. In the same year the Boer War ended, my father hadn’t been born (though he was in 1903) and the First World War was not even a thought. La Belle Epoque (go on, look it up!) was in full swing, three putting hadn’t been invented, and all was right with the world. Charles Dickens had died only 32 years earlier but he didn’t play golf so we can forget about him! The lady members of the club wore long skirts and the men wore jackets and ties – can you imagine how restricting that would be to a golf swing? Those were the heady days when it was good to be alive – if you had the money to enjoy it!

However, the club still thrives – 112 years later. The dress code has changed, the course has been altered, trees and bushes have grown where open farmland previously existed but, cliff falls permitting there is no reason why it should not still be here in another 112 years. Provided no one has dropped it in the meantime, we may still be playing for the present Clinton Centenary Vase!

There were 147 players, but the player who had no thought of dropping it this year and the winner of the Vase was our club captain, Clive Bennett with a magnificent score of 41 points from a handicap of six, now five. Well done, Clive.

The other leading scores were as follows: Division 1; 2, Glenn Page, 39 (4 now 3); 3, Fraser Hasell, 39 (3); 4, Robert Dance, 37 (4); 5, Russell Corney, 37 (6); 6, Mike Oram, 37 (8).

Division 2; 1, Neil Jones, 39 (13 now 12); 2, Alan Baker, 37 (10); 3, Bob Edmunds, 36 (11 now 10); 4, Bill Coles, 35 (11).

Division 3; 1, Taff Powell, 36 (19); 2, Robin Grenyer, 36 (16 now 15); 3, Julian Reynolds, 35 (17).

Ladies.

1, Emily Morey, 39 (6) – stunning play, Emily. Her score of 39 places her in the top five players – not bad out of 147 competitors; 2, Shane Lyon, 36 (20); 3, Helen Chivers, 36 (9).

There was a twos pot of £286 to be shared between 14 players – David Blick (playing off -1) scored two of them.
