Both Honiton and Ottery were on home turf this weekend for the first league game of 2012 and both teams started in competitive spirit with Honiton having a number of opportunities which wouldn't quite go over the line, writes Sophie George.

As a result of some excellent mid field play from Amy Phillips, Lucy Le Cocq and Becky Hammett, Honiton mounted a strong attack into the circle where Vanessa Trude was well placed on the goal post to slot the ball in. Both teams had further attempts at goal but both keepers were able to keep the ball out leaving the score at 1-0 at half time.

In the second half Dawn Mayo took Honiton to 2-0 when she connected well with a pass across the circle. Ottery were not to be outdone and, after having two goals disallowed for their captain kicking them in, finally managed a goal when a Honiton player was unable to stop a strike from the edge of the circle ricocheting into the goal.

With only 10 minutes left to play, Ottery continued to press but Honiton's defence of Sami Parke, Emily Gawler, Sue Stone and Lorraine Ritchie kept up their great work until the end and ensured a great result for the start of the season. A great team result overall with player of the match Emily Gawler.

Honiton continue to practice on a Tuesday evening at Cullompton Sports Centre at 7pm.

until 8.30pm meeting in Honiton at 6.30pm. New members always welcome regardless of ability. For contact details please see www.wcwhl.co.uk/Public/Clubs.php.
