I don't think my partner, John Marchant and I ever developed into contenders but are very much cast as spoilers now.

Our points tally is very poor compared to the rest of the league who seem to look upon us as the "whipping boys" this season and a chance to play a relaxed game of Sunday golf without a care in the world. But, as we are endlessly encouraged in the clubhouse to do so, we can still do teams a lot of damage.

Only the top two of the leagues go through to the knock out stages "as of right" and, as with most of the other leagues, these positions are still up for grabs.

Our last match will be against those affable match play veterans Bob Cleal and Bill Giles who are very much in contention for one of those next round births.

That's why three or four of those other pairings are willing us to act as spoilers and finally win a match. They have failed to take into consideration the fact that John and I have been trying our best all winter to do just that.

We shall know the outcome in a fortnights time but Bob and Bill should know in advance...."It's nothing personal."
