Uplyme put recent setbacks behind them to defeat Ashburton by one wicket in a hard fought and tense game at the King George playing fields, writes Edward Clarke.

Batting first, Tom Durnham held the Ashburton innings together. He was the only visiting batsman able to withstand a sparkling opening burst of left arm quick bowling from Nick Dinnison. He burst through the top order taking three wickets, two cleaned bowled and one caught behind. Dinnison was supported by skipper Steve Batey who finished with figures of four for 30 that accounted for the middle order and the prized wicket of Durnham caught by Mark Brimicombe for a fine 82. Colts Rhys Davies and Daley Holmes also contributed a couple of wickets each to dismiss the visitors or 166.

The challenge for Uplyme was to improve on previous fragile batting performances and put some partnerships together but again apart from a gritty innings of 53 from Mark Batey the other batmen failed to show the necessary application.

At 85 for 6 it looked as though the game was up.

However, Mark Brimicombe joined Batey and between them they showed the application that was required with a stand that brought up the hundred. Batey was then stumped by Berry and it was left to Brimicombe to bat with the tail and try to take as much of the strike as possible. Young Daley Holmes proved to be the ideal foil and together they added another 31 for the eighth wicket.

Rhys Davies went cheaply and that brought last man Charlie Warner to the crease with 25 still required for victory.

He played a fine innings remaining unbeaten without scoring while Brimicombe took the majority of the bowling and hit the ball to all parts to bring up his first 50 of the season. The game reached the second ball of the last over and with the score on 165 Brimicombe finished it in style with a soaring six to see his side home by the narrowest of margins.
