Match day eight proved to be a grim one for three of the four East Devon teams in the Francis Clark Devon League D Division, writes Steve Birley.

Honiton, Seaton and Feniton all lost and the only winners were Uplyme and Lyme Regis.

There was better news at Cloakham Lawns where Axminster defeated Stoke Gabriel by 61 runs.

Joel Seward hit a splendid unbeaten 110 and Jonny Hurford chipped in with 55 whilst Dave Field struck an unbeaten 47 in an Axminster total of 295-5. Gary Larcombe and Matt Pyle then each took three wickets and Alex Wraight bagged a brace as Stoke Gabriel were bowled out for 234.

The D Division saw basement side Honiton slip nearer the drop after a whopping 190-run defeat to Ashburton who batted first and scored 291-6. Skipper Rob Ingram took three wickets and then scored 24 for the bat as his side were bundled out for 101.

Seaton lost by five wickets at home to Yelverton. Sean Perry top scored with 35 in a Seaton total of 150-9, passed in some comfort by the visitors. Joe Berry and skipper Ben Morgan both bagged a brace of wickets. Feniton lost by 74 runs at Filleigh where the home side scored an imposing 277-8. Mark Kingdom took four wickets and John Pyle two. Alex Frankpitt then top scored with 55 in a Feniton reply of 203-9.

The exception to the East Devon ‘rule’ on the day were upwardly mobile Uplyme and Lyme Regis who made short work of visiting Clyst St George who they beat by five wickets.

Mark Batey hit an unbeaten half century for Uplyme who have moved to within 27 points of a promotion place with the half way mark of the season reached this coming Saturday (June 28).

Seaton (4th bottom), Feniton (3rd bottom) and Honiton, 11 points adrift at the bottom, take up three of the bottom four places with Clyst St George the other side in trouble at the wrong end of the table.

In the E Division Whimple were the big winners, defeating fellow high fliers Kentisbeare by 81 runs with Ben Silk top scoring in the game with 76.

Matt Rocket top scored with an unbeaten 78 as Kilmington went down at home to Bridestowe.

In the F Division Upottery beat visiting Chardstock by five wickets.
