The Devon Cricket League have taken the unprecedented step of offering member clubs the chance to play their league matches this Saturday and take in the World Cup quarter-final between England and Sweden (3pm).

The Devon League issued a statement today (Wednesday) and it read:

The League want to be as helpful as it can be in the knowledge that many cricketers will, quite rightly wish to enjoy the match and support the England team. Therefore, the League, in making this statement, are trying to be as helpful as they can be to ensure as many games of cricket as possible go ahead on Saturday. The following will therefore be in place for Saturday, July 7, only.

The following easements will only be allowable with the agreement of both captains and, where applicable, appointed umpires. If teams do not agree then the existing published arrangements, as per the league handbook must stand. There will be no opportunity offered to play the match on an alternative date. Premier and A Division – the integrity of a 100 overs match (50/50) must be retained. However, if both teams agree, then the start time for games may be brought forward, but games must not start before 11am. If both teams agree then the tea interval may be waived. Games must be completed by no later than 8pm. Where the start time is changed it is the home teams’ responsibility to contact the appointed umpires.

B Division – The integrity of a 90 overs match (45/45) must be retained. However, if both teams agree then the start time for games may be brought forward, but games must not start before 11am. If both teams agree then the tea interval may be waived. Games must be completed by no later than 8pm. Where the start time is changed it is the home teams’ responsibility to contact the appointed umpires.

C Division & below– If both teams agree then the start times of matches may be brought forward to a mutually agreed time. If both teams agree then the number of overs may be reduced but no match will be less than the minimum number of overs that constitutes a game i.e. 40 overs (20/20). With the agreement of both teams the tea interval may be waived. Games must be completed by no later than 8pm.

Please note that these revised conditions only apply on Saturday, July 7, 2018. Where these changes are applied to a league match it can only be with the agreement of both teams. If agreement cannot be reached, then the existing playing rules shall apply
