Feniton claimed only their second win of a largely disappointing D Division campaign when they won by 86 runs at Whitchurch, writes Steve Birley

The Acland Park side’s season had been threatening to spiral into a relegation scrap and a fortnight ago skipper Graham Tucker, a club stalwart of more years standing than he’d probably care to remember, called it a day.

Adie Pullin has taken on the skippers’ job and he will have been delighted with his new charges victory and the 20 points banked actually leave Feniton just 27 points behind third placed Uplyme!

The hoists won the toss and invited Feniton to bat and that looked a good decision as the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals to sit a troubled 90-6.

John Pyle, in at number eight, joined Mark Kingdon who had come in at the fall of the second wicket and the pair saw their side first past 100, and then past 200, ultimately leading them to a close of 229-9.

Kingdom struck his highest score of the term to date and was putting bat to ball with great effect when finally out for 67. Pyle, no mean bat himself despite his number eight berth, stroked his way to a deserved half century.

During the tea interval the general feeling was that the runs on the board would probably be enough, though the small ground at Whitchurch did mean that if the hosts got a start they may threaten to spoil Feniton’s day!

It was a wonderful nine over spell, from the vastly experienced Francis Pyle that played a big part in the hosts being bowled out for 143.

Pyle, bowling his trademark in-swingers, sent down nine overs and returned impressive figures of 3-21.

New skipper Pullin chipped in with a brace of wickets and it was happy Feniton camp at stumps.

Top scorer Kingdom said; “It was good to get the win and perhaps that will help our overall confidence. I was pleased with my contribution. It’s been a while coming, and I’ll look to build on this now.”

On Saturday Feniton entertain an Ashburton side that sit fifth, two places and 19 points better of than them.
