Feniton skipper Graham Tucker pulled no punches after his side’s big home defeat to Yelverton, writes Stephen Birley.

He said: “It is going to be a long hard season for us and we are simply going to have to batten down the hatches and get on with it. There will be big blows along the way as dished out by Yelverton, but we need to put this one aside and move on.”

To be fair to Feniton there were mitigating circumstances behind the 135-run defeat. Their current senior side is arguably fielding only five who might be considered regular first eleven players. The players making up the senior side are giving their all – five in the meeting with Yelverton were under twenty, but there’s not the strength in depth and experience of previous Feniton first elevens. They also suffer from their sloping pitch being unsuitable for the roll on roll off covers that keep tracks dry midweek. All last week’s rain culminated in a damp Acland Park surface as described by Tucker who said: “Hard underneath and soft on top and that makes for a wicket that does strange things! That said, you cannot win matches when you concede 100 runs more than you needed to have and you put down seven catches!”

Yelverton plundered a match winning 244-7 and then reduced the home side to eight for two with both Brian Cann and Mark Kingdon back in pavilion. Tucker top scored with 22, but the final wicket was lost with the total on 109 to consign Feniton to a heavy defeat.

On Saturday they travel to a Babbacombe side that skittled Honiton out for just 53 and then knocked them off without loss.

Tucker says: “We can only go there and give our best. I am sure we’ll all be doing that.”
